TMJ Disorder Symptoms

A TMJ symptom could be the result of various underlying problems. The pain may be dull and chronic, or quick and sharp. It can also radiate to neighboring areas like the nearby muscles, teeth, cheek, head bones, lower jaw and the ear.

Some of the more common symptoms people develop with TMJ are:

  • Pain in the jaw muscles
  • Pain in the temple and/or cheek
  • Earache
  • Frequent headaches, including migraines, or neck aches
  • The jaw makes popping sounds
  • The jaw may become locked in one position
  • Sleeping problems

If you have any of these symptoms you should speak to a dental professional that specializes in TMJ to determine the best treatment options for you. Research has shown that five to fifteen percent of the population has symptoms of TMJ and would benefit from seeking professional treatment.

There is a very simple screening test that you may be able to take called the TMJ Scale that has been used throughout the United States since the mid eighties.
