Bruxism Symptom

Bruxism is grinding of the teeth. This grinding activity is observed in most people to some degree. Bruxism includes clenching and/or grinding of the teeth. This grinding activity is caused by the activation of reflex chewing. Chewing is a complex neuromuscular activity controlled by the brain. During sleep, the reflex part is active, while the brain control is inactive resulting in this abnormal chewing action. Bruxism is one of the most common sleep disorders. Thirty to forty million Americans grind their teeth during a nightly basis.

A bruxism symptom may develop from numerous reasons, such as:

  • a lack of symmetry in the teeth
  • a reflection of anxiety
  • a possible digestive problem
  • a disturbed sleep pattern

In a common case, the teeth move side to side against each other causing the tooth enamel to abrade. The abrasion can then cause the removal of the sharp biting surfaces while flattening the edges of the teeth. During this activity, loud noises may be apparent if the molars are the teeth being ground. This noise is often loud enough to wake a sleeping partner.

When given enough time, overall damages can consist of chipped teeth, biting surface wear, abfractions, tooth loss and even occlusion disease. Pain in the jaw joint, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and/or headaches may occur without proper treatment. This is caused by the newly flattened surface, which has been ground down completely. The effects of Bruxism may be quite advanced before sufferers notice and are aware of the implications. In which enough enamel is abraded, and the softer dentine is exposed, the abrasion will unfortunately intensify. This possibility may then cause future dental decay such as tooth fractures and gum recession.
